Set a Purpose for Reading

As students read, have them identify what made Fiona’s rescue difficult.

2. Close-Reading Questions

1. Why did Fiona get the nickname “the loneliest sheep in Great Britain”?
Fiona got the nickname “the loneliest sheep in Great Britain” because she was living “all alone at the bottom of a cliff.” She was trapped there for at least two years.
(RI.3.1 Text Evidence)

2. What do you think made the rescue dangerous?
Rescuing Fiona was dangerous because of where she was stuck. The article says that there was “sea on one side and a rocky slope on the other.” To get to Fiona, the farmers had to use ropes to climb down to the base of the cliff. Then they had to hoist her up.
(RI.3.8 Cause/Effect)

3. How has Fiona’s life changed since she was rescued, according to the article?
According to the article, Fiona is doing much better. She is no longer alone. The article says that “she lives on a farm with other sheep to keep her company.”
(RI.3.8 Comparison)

3. Skill Building

FEATURED SKILL: Reading a Map

Using the map that appears with the article, guide students to understand that Scotland is one of three parts of the large island known as Great Britain. (The other two are England and Wales.) Together with Northern Ireland, they make up the United Kingdom.
