Are Video Games Good For You?

Kids are often told that playing video games is a waste of time. But many people don’t think that’s true!

In fact, the U.S. government recently hired thousands of gamers. They’re training to work as air traffic controllers. That’s an important job. Air traffic controllers help planes safely take off and land. Officials say gamers have many of the skills that air traffic controllers need. For example, gamers are often good at solving problems quickly. They’re able to focus for a long time too.

Still, many people think playing video games can do more harm than good. They say too much gaming can cause health problems. Plus, some people say there are better ways to build skills than by staring at a screen.

So who's right? Are video games good for you or not?

Many kids love playing video games. They see them as a fun way to relax. Gaming can also help you connect with others. You can even play with friends who live far away. Plus, playing games like Minecraft can help kids learn teamwork.

Bader Chaarani is a college professor who studies the effects of gaming. He says video games may improve kids’ memory. Gaming may also help them focus.

But experts say kids shouldn’t spend too much time gaming. Players benefit only if they don’t overdo it.

“One hour or less per day seems like the sweet spot,” Chaarani says.

Some people argue that there are better ways to build skills than by gaming. They say reading and playing sports can have similar benefits. And gaming has more downsides than those activities do.

For one, video games are made to keep kids playing as long as possible, says Jill Murphy. She helps families use technology safely.

“The games just keep going and going,” Murphy explains. “There is no end.”

Some kids play for so long that they have less time for important activities like sleeping and playing outside. Too much gaming can also lead to headaches or sore wrists.
