Should Dogs Be Allowed in Restaurants?

People love to sit outside with their dogs at The Bearded Pig. That’s a restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida. But late last year, the restaurant’s owners learned they were breaking local rules. Only service dogs trained to help people were allowed at restaurants in Jacksonville. Co-owner Chad Munsey didn’t want to ban pups.

“Dogs are part of people’s families,” he says.

Munsey helped get local leaders to change the rules. Restaurants in Jacksonville can now apply to have dog-friendly outdoor patios.

Many people love not having to leave their pets at home when they dine out. But others don’t want to eat near dogs, which can be noisy or drool a lot.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Dogs make many people happy. Allowing them in restaurants could bring in more customers. Some pet owners don’t want to spend too much time away from their animals. They might choose to go to only dog-friendly restaurants. I would love to bring my dog, Frankie, when my family goes out to eat.

Plus, dogs help people connect. When customers ask to pet a dog, they might start talking with its owner. That can help people make new friends.

And anyone who doesn’t like dogs? They can just order takeout or pick a different restaurant!

Allowing dogs in restaurants can be dangerous and unhealthy. They shed hair and dander. That can cause some people to have allergic reactions, like coughing or sneezing. And what if dogs get too close to where food is prepared? Their hair could end up in people’s meals.

Also, pups can disturb diners. Some growl or bark loudly. That could scare customers. If people aren’t comfortable eating near dogs, a restaurant might lose business.

My family used to have a dog. We never brought him to restaurants. He probably would have tried to eat other customers’ food!
