Should Museums Ban You From Taking Photos?

Last June, a visitor at a museum in Italy broke a chair covered in crystals. He sat on it while posing for a photo! Later, a different museum visitor in Italy tore a hole in a painting. He tripped while taking a selfie.

Accidents like these have some people calling for a ban on taking photos in museums. They say it would keep people from damaging works of art.

But others say it’s fine for people to take photos at museums. Visitors just need to be careful.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

I want to visit the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center. It’s filled with amazing artwork and meaningful pieces from history. But if people are taking selfies the whole time, they could block my view. That could ruin my experience.

Also, when people are busy posing for photos, they may miss out on seeing something really cool.

I love going to the Museum of Discovery and Science. My family takes a lot of pictures there. The photos show fun memories. They help me remember what I saw.

Sharing photos from your time at a museum may encourage others to visit. As long as people follow the rules and are careful, they should be allowed to take photos.
