Are There Too Many Holidays?

You probably know October 31 is Halloween. But did you know that October 29 is Cat Day? It’s one of about 1,600 special days in the National Day Calendar.

Many people argue that a lot of these made-up holidays aren’t necessary. Some of them were started by companies to sell stuff.

But others say these unusual holidays are fun. Some of them encourage people to help others, like International Volunteer Day.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

Holidays aren’t special if we have them every day. And some of the made-up holidays are silly. For example, there’s a Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day. Fake holidays take away from the magic and importance of real ones. True holidays should be about spending time with family and friends.

Plus, some of these holidays, like National Candy Day, encourage us to eat unhealthy foods.

I like having fun unofficial holidays. It gives us more to look forward to. Some stores have special deals on certain holidays. For example, you can get a free doughnut on National Doughnut Day. Celebrating these holidays is optional. You can ignore them if you want.

Also, some holidays are for good causes. For instance, many people raise money for animals on National Wildlife Day.
