Do Kids Need Homework?

Many kids dream of not having homework. That dream has come true for students in the LaSalle Parish school district in Louisiana. In January, officials announced that kids wouldn’t have homework for the rest of the school year.

Some people say homework makes school feel like a chore. It can also stress kids out.

But others think homework is important. They say it helps students practice what they learned in class.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

Homework is useful. It helps you remember what you learned in class. It allows you to review lessons and get extra practice. Also, having homework helps you learn to manage your time. After school, I fit in my homework around volleyball practice and dance lessons.

Homework also gives parents a chance to see what their kids are learning. And they can help make sure we aren’t falling behind.

Kids need a break after spending so many hours at school. Sometimes homework is just repeating what we did in class. That’s not a good use of our time. Grading homework takes up a lot of teachers’ time too.

Many kids have activities after school. When I have guitar lessons, I feel rushed to finish my homework. Plus, it can be stressful for parents to make sure homework gets done. They could be having fun with their kids instead.
