Should You Get Rewards for Good Grades?

Want a free pizza? How about a new game? Or maybe a handful of cash? Some parents, schools, and stores offer prizes like these for good grades.

Many people say rewarding students is a smart idea. They think it gives kids a goal to work toward. That could make students want to study harder.

But some teachers and parents believe that rewards send the wrong message. They worry that kids will think grades are all that matters. Plus, rewards can be unfair to students who try hard but don’t earn straight A’s.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

Many students try very hard to get good grades. Rewards can encourage them. If kids know they will get a prize, they’ll put in extra effort.

There is a store near where I live called Collect ’Em Again. The owners give $1 in store credit for every A on students’ report cards. Last fall, I earned $6. I used it to help buy a Pokémon card. It felt really good. I’m excited to get my next report card!

Instead of hoping for rewards, kids should focus on doing their best. Doing well in school is important for your future.

Plus, rewards won’t make you smarter or help you pass a hard test. If you struggle in school, a prize will not fix it. What really help kids do well are learning and putting in effort. That is what prepares you for real life. You won’t get a reward for everything you do once you’re grown up!
