Is Bigfoot Real?

For years, people have told stories of a hairy creature hiding in the woods.

As You Read, Think About: Why are so many people interested in Bigfoot?

What’s that stomping through the forest? It’s big and hairy and looks like an ape. Could it be Bigfoot?

For years, people across the United States have reported seeing a strange creature called Bigfoot. But so far, no one has found proof that the beast is real.

Some people have spent years trying to find evidence of Bigfoot. One of them is Cindy Caddell. She works for the U.S. Forest Service. She has been looking for Bigfoot since she was a kid.

Last June, Caddell led a search for Bigfoot in Oregon. One night, the group recorded loud, strange calls in the forest.

The noises were “similar to what some people believe are Bigfoot calls,” Caddell says. Experts haven’t yet been able to link the sounds to any known animals.

So is Bigfoot just a myth? Or does the creature really exist?

Spooky Stories

Tales of a giant apelike creature go back hundreds of years. Native American tribes have long told stories about a beast some called Sasquatch. Some stories say the creature is gentle and shy. Others describe it as a scary monster.

The name Bigfoot was first used for the giant creature in 1958. That’s when workers in California found huge footprints in the mud. The prints were too big to belong to a human. Some were 16 inches long! The find became big news nationwide.

Soon people across the country reported seeing giant footprints too. Some said they had found Bigfoot’s fur or poop. Others claimed to have seen the creature with their own eyes.

This image is from a 1967 video that some people claim shows Bigfoot.

In 1967, two men traveled to California. They filmed what is often considered the most famous Bigfoot video ever. The minute-long clip shows a tall, hairy figure walking in the woods. Some people believe the video is fake. But others think it’s proof that Bigfoot exists.

Over time, interest in the giant creature has only grown. Park rangers, teachers, and even some scientists have said they’ve spotted it.

About 14 years ago, Caddell saw a large creature lurking in the Oregon woods. “That could have been a Sasquatch,” Caddell says. “I definitely don’t walk around by myself in the dark.”

Pause and Think

What evidence do some people say proves Bigfoot is real?

What evidence do some people say proves Bigfoot is real?

Not So Fast

Still, many people say the evidence isn’t strong enough. Experts point out that strange noises, fur, and poop don’t prove anything. They could belong to wild animals, like bears, coyotes, or wolves. After all, plenty of creatures roam the forests.

And those giant footprints workers found in California in 1958? They turned out to be a hoax. Two brothers secretly placed them there as a joke.

Most experts agree that a key piece of evidence, like a body, is missing.

Even Caddell agrees that unless that type of proof is found, Bigfoot will remain a mystery. But people will keep searching. And in the meantime, the Bigfoot debate lives on.

Solving the Mystery

Here’s what some people have to say about whether Bigfoot is really out there. What do you believe?

Say Cheese! Some experts say that if Bigfoot were real, we’d have clearer photos of it by now. But others argue that Bigfoot comes out only at night. That makes it harder to film.

Giant Feet: Scientists have studied hundreds of footprints that people claimed were Bigfoot’s. Most are too big to belong to a human. But they don’t match any known animal’s prints.

Just Wait: Other mysterious creatures have turned out to be real. Take the giant squid. For years, people thought it was made up. But now we know it’s real. Who’s to say the same isn’t true of Bigfoot?

1. What is Sasquatch? Why does the author mention it?

2. What kinds of evidence do people use to support the idea that Bigfoot is real?

3. What is a hoax, based on the article? What does the author mean when she writes that the giant footprints found in 1958 were a hoax?
