Should You Pick Your Seat in Class?

It’s the start of a new school day. Many kids head to their assigned seats. But at a growing number of schools, kids can sit anywhere they want. They can choose what they sit on too! That includes rolling desk chairs, stools, or even exercise balls.

This is called flexible seating. Some people think it makes learning more fun. It also allows kids to be more comfortable in class. That may help them focus.

But others say flexible seating can make it hard to pay attention. For example, some students may be distracted if classmates are bouncing on exercise balls.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

I like when teachers give us a choice of where to sit. It shows that they trust us. That makes us want to do better work.

One of my teachers lets us pick where we sit. I like being near the front of the room with my friends. If we get too loud, my teacher separates us.

Plus, our desk chairs can swivel all the way around. They’re better than regular chairs because they allow us to sit however we’re most comfortable.

Having assigned seats with regular desks can prevent a lot of problems. Kids who choose their own seats often sit with their friends. They might talk too much. That could cause them to miss what their teacher says.

I like that my teacher chooses our seats. It allows me to get to know kids I might not normally talk to.

Also, you may not get to pick where you sit at work when you grow up. Assigned seating is good practice.
