Should Schools Ban Cupcakes?

You won’t find cupcakes and cookies at classroom birthday celebrations in Arlington, Virginia. As of this school year, kids in public schools there aren’t allowed to bring in snacks for parties.

Many districts have similar rules. School officials point out that sweet treats often have ingredients that could be harmful for kids with food allergies. Some schools allow only healthy snacks for class parties.

But not everyone wants to keep sugary treats out of classroom celebrations. They say it’s more fun to have cupcakes than carrot sticks at a party.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

Kids with food allergies are often left out of parties with certain sweet treats. That’s not fair. No one should feel like the odd one out. Also, having too much sugar can cause health problems. You can celebrate without sweets. One year on my birthday, I picked an activity for my class. We played an exercise game from GoNoodle. It was fun!

Cupcakes and cookies aren’t the healthiest foods. But it’s OK to enjoy them in small amounts for special events. Celebrating a birthday with sweets gives kids a chance to take a break. Plus, students may be able to invite only a few kids to parties outside school. But class parties include everyone. They should be as fun as possible.
