An Honor for Eagles

The mighty bald eagle has long appeared on our money and many government buildings. In December, former President Joe Biden signed a law officially making it our national bird.

The Great Seal of the United States

With its powerful wings, the bald eagle represents strength. It has been a symbol of the United States since 1782. That’s when it first appeared on the Great Seal of the United States. Today the seal is on important government documents. It is also on the back of the $1 bill.

Bald eagles are found only in North America. By the mid-1900s, they were in danger of dying out in much of the U.S. Hunting and chemicals used to kill insects had caused them to nearly disappear. But thanks to rescue efforts, the bald eagle population has soared in the past few decades.

Many people were surprised to learn that the bald eagle wasn’t already our national bird. Now it’s official.

“For nearly 250 years, we called the bald eagle the national bird when it wasn’t,” says Jack Davis. He works with the National Eagle Center. “But now the title is official, and no bird is more deserving.”
