Harry Styles Made Us Dance

No song was bigger in 2022 than “As It Was” by Harry Styles. It first reached number 1 on the music charts in April. Then it moved in and out of the top spot over the next few months. In all, “As It Was” spent 15 weeks at number 1. That’s a record for a song by a solo artist.

Ketanji Brown Jackson made history in April. She became the first Black woman to be named to the U.S. Supreme Court. That’s the highest court in our country.
The Supreme Court has nine justices, or judges. They make important decisions on laws that can affect the entire country.
Jackson said, “I can only hope that my life and career, my love of this country and the Constitution . . . will inspire future generations of Americans.”

These action figures were named three of the Dolls of the Year by the Toy Foundation. The dolls are based on the Marvel characters Nakia, Shuri, and Okoye. The characters were featured in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which arrived in movie theaters in November.

Athletes from around the world took part in the Winter Olympics in February. The Games were held in Beijing, China.
America won 25 medals! There were 8 gold, 10 silver, and 7 bronze. Chloe Kim is a snowboarder. She won gold for the women’s halfpipe. Figure skater Nathan Chen also won gold.

Tragedy Hit the U.S.

On September 28, Hurricane Ian struck Florida. It was the deadliest storm to hit the state since 1935. Ian brought heavy rain, flooding, high winds, and power outages. Many schools, businesses, and homes were destroyed. Sadly, more than 125 people in Florida were killed.
To be called a hurricane, a storm’s winds must reach at least 74 miles per hour (mph). A hurricane is listed at one of five levels. A Category 5 is the strongest. Ian was a Category 4 storm when it hit Florida. It had winds up to 150 mph.
