Smile and Say "Trees!"
Every fall for the past 10 years, drivers on a highway in Oregon have gotten an extra smile!
In autumn, a giant smiley face appears in the forest on a nearby hill. The face is made with two kinds of trees. The Douglas fir trees stay green all year. But the larch trees’ needles turn yellow in the fall. They shape the face.
A lumber company planted the face during reforestation, or replanting of a forest, in 2011. The face will appear each fall for 30 to 50 years. Then the trees are set to be harvested, or cut down for use in products.
