Read the Pledge of Allegiance below. A pledge is a promise. Many Americans say the pledge to show they are loyal, or true, to the U.S. Check out the facts below and answer the two questions.
"I pledge allegiance
to the Flag
of the United States
of America
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible,
with liberty
and justice
for all."
That’s how long Francis Bellamy said it took him to write the pledge.

In 1898, this state became the first to pass a law saying students should recite the pledge every day.
The pledge first appeared in 1892 in a kids magazine.
