The flag of the UAE

In a sandy desert of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), you may hear a wonderful sound. Some people say it’s like a low whistle. Others describe it as the hum of a plane. But, if you look around, you won’t see any animal or machine making this noise. It’s the Singing Sand Dunes of Liwa.

The sound comes from the shifting ground. It’s called singing or booming sand. It’s in about 30 deserts in the world, including one in the UAE. The sound can be heard from more than 5 miles away!

Until recently, scientists wondered what was producing the interesting noise. They now know it’s caused by millions of grains of sand slowly sliding down dunes. (A dune is a hill or mountain of sand.)

The singing is especially loud during a windy time at the end of March called Jawlat Al Riyah. That name means “wandering winds.”

Emiratis visit the dunes to listen—and also for fun! Some families go “dune bashing,” which is driving SUVs up and down dunes. And many tourists enjoy sliding down dunes on surfboards.

Celebrate

Many years ago, Emiratis sailed into the waters of the Persian Gulf to dive for pearls. They used a traditional boat called a dhow (dow). Today there’s a yearly dhow race to celebrate this tradition.

Fun and Games

For thousands of years, people have used falcons to hunt for food, like small animals. Today falconry is also a traditional sport in the UAE. In one event, the birds race each other. The sport requires a strong bond between humans and their predator birds.

The Arabian oryx is the national animal of the UAE. These desert creatures have straight or slightly curved horns that grow up to 30 inches long. The animals’ white color helps keep them cool. It reflects sunlight and desert heat.

The Burj Khalifa

Look at This!

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the world’s tallest building. With 163 floors, this 2,717-foot-tall skyscraper houses shops, offices, outdoor swimming pools, and a hotel. The building’s design keeps it stable in strong winds.

Let's Eat!

The date is the national fruit of the UAE. The date tree has been important to Emiratis for centuries. Its fruit is delicious to eat. Its trunk is used for building houses. And its leaves can be woven into baskets.
