The White House Goes Green

Do you know why people wear green on March 17 to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? That color represents Ireland, the country where the holiday began hundreds of years ago.

The White House, in Washington, D.C., takes things to the next level. The water in two fountains at the president’s home are dyed green!

Other landmarks, or famous spots, in America go green for the holiday too. In New York City, the Empire State Building glows with green lights. And in Chicago, people dye the Chicago River green!
