Should Kids Have Gym Class Every Day?

Last year, students in Austin, Texas, started spending more time in the gym. They began having physical education (P.E.) class every day.

Some school officials point out that kids should exercise for at least an hour each day. More time in P.E. class can help students meet that goal. Plus, doctors say physical activity helps reduce stress.

But others argue that there are more important subjects than P.E. They say P.E. class every day takes too much time away from math, reading, and science.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

I think having gym each day is a great idea. Gym helps me learn to be on a team because we play group sports. We also build our flexibility and strength in gym. That helps me to be a cheerleader.

Experts say being active helps kids concentrate. After gym, I’m able to focus better and finish my work. That helps me stay on the honor roll.

Gym class every day would be exhausting. Plus, we would lose time for reading and writing. Writing is my favorite subject. It’s what makes me feel most successful.

In gym class, we always play the same games. There are other ways to exercise. Some students do sports after school or on weekends. During recess I stay active by using ropes and playing four corners.
