Dogs or Cats?

Americans love dogs and cats. About 54 out of 100 households in the U.S. own dogs and 35 out of 100 own cats. That’s according to the American Pet Products Association. But many people can’t agree which is a better pet.

Cat lovers argue that cats don’t bark or jump on visitors like dogs do. Also, they say it’s cheaper to own a cat. Most dogs eat more than cats do. And they often need training classes, which can be expensive.

Dog owners point out that dogs help people in ways that cats can’t. For example, walking their pets helps dog owners stay active. And dogs can be trained as service animals to help people who have a disability.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Cats are much easier to care for than dogs. They can be left home alone more easily. They’re better suited to live in smaller homes or apartments. Also, cats use litter boxes, while dogs need to constantly be let outside to use the bathroom.

Cats are great companions, especially for people who want to relax. Dogs can  jump on you. Some dogs even bite.

There are so many reasons dogs are better than cats. First, I think they’re smarter than cats. They can learn tricks and be trained as service dogs. A dog works at my school! He’s a therapy dog that helps kids.

Also, dogs are loyal. They greet you when you get home, and they try to stay by your side. They can go on walks, play ball, or even join you for a swim.
