Supersized Statue
Sherry Talbot/Alamy Stock Photo
A model of the finished statue—it will be bigger than Mount Rushmore!
A monument to a Native American leader is taking shape in South Dakota. It will honor Tasunke Witko, who is also known as Crazy Horse. In the late 1800s, this Lakota leader fought to protect his people’s land.
But some people say Witko wouldn’t have wanted the statue carved into the mountain. The mountains in the area are sacred, or holy, to his people.

Construction vehicles like these have been working on the statue since 1948.
