Do Kids Need Homework?

Homework is a big part of life for most kids. Third graders can spend about three hours per week doing homework.

Some experts say homework helps students remember what they learn in school and develop good study habits.

But many parents say homework can stress kids out. Plus, some studies show it doesn’t help kids do better on tests.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Homework is a tool that allows students to practice what we learn. Without it, we might forget what we were taught in class.

Plus, assignments show teachers whether or not kids understand the day’s lessons. Homework also teaches kids how to be responsible. If kids manage their time wisely, they’ll still have time for other activities.

Kids need a chance to rest after a long day of school. Too much homework can cut into family time and activities. Sometimes I want to join my friends outside, but I’m stuck inside doing homework.

I stay up late to finish homework at least once a week. If kids don’t get enough sleep, they’ll be too tired to pay attention in class the next day.
