An elephant’s trunk is the world’s longest nose. It also happens to be one amazing sniffer!

Scientists did an experiment with elephants in South Africa. They built a big maze. One part of the maze led to a bucket of leaves that elephants love, like wild pear leaves. The other part led to leaves that elephants dislike. “Think chocolate versus brussels sprouts,” says scientist Melissa Schmitt.

When the elephants entered, they were able sniff out the scents. They followed their noses to the treat! Scientists were impressed. They say human noses could not tell the difference between the smells, even up close. They think elephants use their super sense of smell to find food that’s far away.
